Yes, a referral from your GP (or another specialist) is required to book a consultation.
There are two main reasons for this:
1. Your Medical History: Your GP referral contains important medical information and history that Dr. Burnet needs to provide you with the most appropriate care.
2. Medicare Rebates: Without a valid referral, you will not be eligible to claim any Medicare rebates for your specialist appointments.
A standard referral from your GP is valid for 12 months.
However, if you are seeing Dr. Burnet for a new concern (even within that 12-month period), we recommend visiting your GP for a new referral. This allows your GP to conduct any initial testing and ensures Dr. Burnet has your most relevant medical records.
Please note that referrals from other specialists (such as a fertility clinic) are only valid for 3 months. If you are transitioning from fertility treatment to pregnancy care, you will need to get a new referral from your GP to ensure you receive your Medicare rebates.
Please bring the following items to your first consultation:
• Your GP referral (this is essential)
• Any relevant test results, reports, or scans
• Your Medicare card and any private health fund details (digital versions on your phone are perfectly fine)
Finally, please bring any questions you have! We find it helpful to write these down beforehand so we can be sure to answer everything for you.
Dr. Burnet's schedule is a blend of in-clinic consultations and his commitments at the hospital for deliveries.
Our typical consulting hours are:
• North Sydney Clinic: All day Monday, all day Wednesday, and alternate Thursday & Friday afternoons.
• Sydney CBD Clinic: Tuesday mornings.
(Dr. Burnet is typically at the hospital on alternate Thursday and Friday mornings).
While we will always endeavour to accommodate your requested appointment time, please understand that the unpredictable nature of obstetric care means we may not always be able to. We appreciate your flexibility!
We understand that unexpected events and emergencies can happen. If you need to cancel or reschedule your appointment, we simply ask that you provide us with as much notice as possible.
This allows us to manage our schedule and offer that appointment time to another patient who may be waiting for care.
North Sydney Rooms
If your appointment is scheduled in the North Sydney rooms, there is plenty of street parking available on the Pacific Highway (metered, outside peak times), Berry Street (metered) and Edward Street (some unmetered).
We are also a short 5 minute walk from the Victoria Cross Metro Station or a 10 minute walk from North Sydney Station.
Macquarie Street (CBD) Rooms
Our Macquarie Street office is convenient for patients coming straight from, and returning straight to work. There is no nearby parking and if you are travelling from outside the CBD we recommend you travel by public transport.
The office is within short walking distance of Martin Place Station.
Dr. Burnet is a private specialist Obstetrician and Gynaecologist and therefore does not bulk bill.
For a detailed schedule of our consultation and obstetric management fees, please contact our friendly reception team.
A Medicare rebate is available for most specialist services, and we can process this for you in our clinic immediately after payment.
We make it easy for you. After you have paid for your consultation, our reception team will process your Medicare claim electronically for you, right here in the clinic.
The rebate is typically paid directly into your nominated bank account (the one registered with Medicare) within 24-48 hours.
