Congratulations! This is a very exciting time. Your first step is to visit your GP. Your GP will be able to confirm your pregnancy with blood tests and provide you with a referral for an initial ultrasound (often called a "dating scan"). Once you have your GP referral, please call our team to book your first appointment with Dr. Burnet. We like to see our new obstetric patients for their first consultation between 8 and 10 weeks of pregnancy.

Your first appointment will take place when you are around 8-10 weeks along. From there, you will have appointments on the following schedule: • Every 4 weeks until 30 weeks • Fortnightly until 36 weeks • Weekly until the big day If you ever have concerns outside the typical schedule, you are always welcome to come in for a quick check.

We are committed to being fully transparent about the costs of private obstetric care. Our fees are structured in two main parts: 1. Antenatal Consultation Fees: These are the fees for each of your individual appointments with Dr. Burnet and the specialist midwifery team throughout your pregnancy. A Medicare rebate is available for each of these visits. 2. The Obstetric Management Fee: This is a one-time fee (explained in the FAQ below) that covers the 24/7 on-call availability of Dr. Burnet, the complete management of your labour and birth, and your in-hospital care after delivery. Private health insurance generally covers your hospital costs (like your room and the birth suite), while Medicare provides a rebate for your specialist (obstetrician) fees. We can't wait to meet you! Please bring the following items to your first obstetric consultation: • Your GP referral (this is essential for your visit). • All blood test results and ultrasound scans (especially your dating scan) that you have had for this pregnancy. • Your Medicare card and any private health fund details (digital versions on your phone are perfectly fine). • A list of any questions you may have. We want to make sure we answer everything for you right from the start!

Absolutely. We encourage you to bring your partner or one trusted support person (such as a friend, parent, or sibling) with you to your appointments. This is your journey, and we want you to feel as comfortable and supported as possible. You are also welcome to bring your children along. We just kindly note that our consultations often involve important and detailed discussions, which many patients find easier to focus on without the (wonderful) distraction of little ones. We do ask you limit guests to 2-3 so we can fit everybody. But we would love to meet your loved ones and have them share in this special time with you.

The Obstetric Management Fee (also known as the 'Pregnancy Management Fee') is a one-time, out-of-pocket fee charged by all private obstetricians. It is separate from your individual antenatal consultation fees. This important fee covers the comprehensive, 24/7 management of your entire pregnancy and delivery. Specifically, this fee covers: • 24/7 On-Call Availability: Access to Dr. Burnet 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, for any urgent advice, emergencies, or when you go into labour. • Management of Labour & Delivery: The complete management of your labour and the birth of your baby, regardless of how long or complex it may be. • In-Hospital Postnatal Care: Dr. Burnet's daily visits to you in the hospital after your baby is born. • Your 6-Week Postnatal Check-Up: A final, comprehensive consultation to check on your health and recovery. This fee is typically charged around 28 weeks of pregnancy and is eligible for a significant Medicare rebate. Dr. Burnet has admitting and delivery rights at Sydney's leading private and public hospitals. This is a very important question, and we have a clear plan to ensure you are always in expert hands. Dr. Burnet works as part of a small, on-call group of highly reputable specialist obstetricians whom he trusts and works with very closely. If an unforeseen situation arises (such as Dr. Burnet attending another birth), one of these trusted colleagues will provide expert care for your delivery. In the case of any planned leave (e.g., a conference or holiday), you will be notified well in advance. We will seamlessly transfer your care plan and, where possible, arrange for you to meet the covering obstetrician beforehand to ensure you are completely comfortable.

Your safety and peace of mind are our top priorities. At your initial consultation, Dr. Burnet will provide you with a clear plan for exactly what to do in an emergency or if you think you are in labour. This will include 24/7 emergency contact numbers and the direct phone number for the birth unit at your chosen hospital, ensuring you always have immediate access to expert advice, day or night.
