A colposcopy is a simple, 10-15 minute procedure we perform in our clinic to get a much closer look at the cells of your cervix. It is the standard next step after an abnormal CST (Cervical Screening) result.

During the procedure, Dr. Burnet uses a special magnifying instrument called a colposcope (which remains outside your body, like a pair of binoculars on a stand) to view your cervix in detail. A female nurse chaperone will be present for your comfort and support. A solution is applied to the cervix to help highlight any abnormal cells.

This is a very common concern, and we are committed to making the procedure as comfortable as possible. For most women, it feels very similar to a regular Cervical Screening Test. You may feel mild discomfort from the speculum, and the solution can sometimes cause a brief, mild stinging.

If a small biopsy (a tiny tissue sample, about the size of a pinhead) is needed, you may feel a quick, sharp pinch or a mild cramping sensation, but this is over very quickly. Dr. Burnet will talk you through every single step of the process, ensuring you are informed and comfortable.
